Go with the flow
Long before Gwyneth Paltrow bequeathed us with her brand of soupy-goopy wellness, yoga permeated the zeitgeist. (Don’t believe me? Ask your bra-burning aunt. You know the one.) And while Ms. Uncoupling herself, along with lululemon and about 1.5M other Instagram influencers have sung its praises, it takes actually practicing yoga to understand its benefits. So what’s holding you back?
If you’re anything like me, it’s the inability to let go of the concern for looking good. Maybe you’re worried you don’t have the “right” gear, or you’re not flexible enough, or your mind isn’t built to be still. To each and every excuse, I say, “Perfect!”
Focusing on steady breath (also known as ujjayi) and steady vision (also known as drishti), yoga shifts your attention from external comparison to internal composure. Flowing from one posture to the next, with light, uplifting music to further drown out your inner critic, yoga engages your muscles and releases your mind.
Now that’s the kind of soupy-goopy bliss we all could get down with.
Join me at the next yoga class, won’t you?
